~~The Lovezone with Geena Lee ~~ Episode 7: For The Love Of Aaliyah
I remember Aaliyah, a young girl with a soft and sultry voice who had the young nation under her hip hop flavoured R&B groove. She was mysterious with her eye patch and bandana and later sideswept bangs that always concealed half her face, but we didn’t need to see it to know that she was beautiful. She was sexy but never raunchy, revealing a toned torso that tapered into baggy jeans while dancing with assertiveness and appeal. Aaliyah was one in a million. She ushered in a sound and vocal delivery that we can still see influencing the R&B princesses of today (Ciara comes to mind here). We were all shocked and devasted at Aaliyah’s untimely passing on August 25, 2001. She had only just blossomed into full womanhood and was poised to present to the world the maturation and dimension of her talents. She had so much ahead of her, and so many who miss her. Aaliyah, you truly lived up to your name: exalted.
